How to Measure a Thermal Transfer Ribbon

Correct ribbon dimensions and winding orientation are just as important as selecting wax, wax/resin or resin.

Ribbon width

Measure the ribbon from edge to edge. It should generally be slightly wider than the label or printed image area so the print head is protected from direct contact with the label surface.

Ribbon length

Length is often specified in feet or meters. The printer's ribbon capacity determines the maximum roll size it can accept.

Core size

Confirm the ribbon core inside diameter and overall roll configuration. Desktop and industrial printers frequently use different formats.

Coated side

Ribbon ink can face inward (CSI) or outward (CSO). The printer model determines which orientation is required.

What to send us if you are unsure

Printer manufacturer and model, current ribbon part number, ribbon width and length, current label material, and a photo of the existing ribbon are usually enough to begin identifying a replacement.
