Both technologies create crisp barcode and text images, but they are designed for different label-life and durability requirements.

Choose direct thermal when…
- The label only needs to last through a short distribution or service cycle.
- You want to eliminate ribbon loading and inventory.
- The label will not be exposed to excessive heat, sunlight, abrasion or chemicals.
- Shipping, receiving, food rotation or temporary identification is the primary use.
Choose thermal transfer when…
- The printed image must remain readable for months or years.
- The application requires synthetic materials.
- The label may encounter abrasion, moisture, heat, chemicals or outdoor exposure.
- You need the flexibility to match wax, wax/resin or resin ribbons to the label.
